I would never admit to knowing the ways of the Lord. The ways of the Lord are so far above me that I cannot even begin to comprehend them.
Psalm 115:3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.
I cannot tell you why one family has a perfectly healthy baby while another family holds their lifeless baby in their arms. I can’t tell you why a wife grieves the loss of her young husband while another couple celebrates their 50th anniversary. I simply can’t begin to understand why a family loses all of their earthly possessions in a flood while another family is signing papers on their brand new home.
Life is not fair. No one ever told us that it would be. How did we ever come to the conclusion that this life would be without strife? We can contemplate and seek to understand why these things happen in life, but most answers come up empty.
I’ve heard all of my life that God is good. I’ve heard these statements – God is good because my baby is perfectly healthy. God is good because he allowed me to celebrate 50 years with my spouse. God is good because he let us buy a brand new home. And you know what?
GOD IS GOOD.
God is a good father who gives good gifts to his children.
James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows.
But what do we say when circumstances are less than perfect? What do we say when we simply feel like there is no goodness to be found? Is God still good when we lose someone in an accident? Is God still good in the darkest day of your life? Is He good when you feel like everything that you held onto in this life has been stripped away from you? What happens when the plans for your life are wiped out and all you have left is the Lord? Is He still good?
GOD IS INFINITELY GOOD.
God is good because He is sufficient enough for any problem you face. God is good because when you cannot carry on, He gives you his strength and carries you.
2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
God is good because His joy is your strength.
Nehemiah 8:10 The joy of the Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.
He is good because He loves you no matter what you have done. He is love. He is good because he is faithful to provide for you and sustain you in every moment.
Psalms 119:90 Your faithfulness endures to all generation; you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
God is good because even after the world was broken by the curse, He himself came to be our perfect sacrifice so that we could have a right relationship with Him. God is good because that is who He is, in every circumstance.
We don’t base the goodness of God on what we feel. We base the goodness of God on His character and who He is.
So God is good…….God is good when he protects us from harm. He is even good when the harm comes to us and He continues to walks beside us.
And what fills my heart with such joy these days is that He is good because He is the God of redemption!
Even when we go through horrible life circumstances and we feel like this life is over, God ever so softly and gently, like an artist with a chisel, redeems and restores our hurt and suffering.
He never leaves our ashes as such if we give them to Him. He longs to do a new thing in our lives. He’s so good that He even uses the bad that we have endured to help and restore others when they go through similar circumstances. He never wastes a hurt in our lives.
We don’t forget what was, we don’t replace what we lost…..but God adds richness and fullness to our story…the story that He continues to write every day for us.
Don’t give up in the middle of your story. You never know what beautiful picture of redemption and restoration He is writing for you. In many ways, I know that parts of this life will always be a struggle and heart ache will be unavoidable until we get to heaven, but our GOOD Father longs to weave together the “mess” of our earthly lives.
When we look back at our story, all we will be able to see is the beautiful tapestry that He, our author, has woven together.
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
